Posted November 05, 2018 17:13:31 A long-time Minecraft creator has taken to Reddit to announce that the game he founded and co-developed for Microsoft Windows, Xbox One and Steam has been scrapped.
The announcement comes a day after Mojang announced that it was ending support for Minecraft.
The company’s statement on the Mojang site said that the decision was taken because of the “increasingly difficult economic environment”.
The statement continued: “Mojang is no longer in a position to sustain this development and is not in a place to continue to support the Minecraft community in the future.
We thank everyone for their time and support over the years, and wish you the best of luck as you pursue your own Minecraft adventures.”
Mojang has been working on Minecraft for two decades, developing titles such as the hugely popular Minecraft: Story Mode, as well as a number of expansions.
“Mongolians have supported Mojang for so long because we believed that there was something in the world that was just waiting to be discovered,” Mojang said in a statement to ABC News.
“Our belief was that if we could make something out of something that was already there, then maybe it would have an impact on the world.”
The company said it was closing its doors at the end of October, with Mojang employees expected to “receive severance packages ranging from $200 to $250”.
The announcement also said that Mojang would be looking to create an “alternative Minecraft” for the “future”, and that it hoped to “implement a dedicated server to support this new server”.
“We hope to announce details about a server soon, and hope to make an announcement soon about the game’s future,” Mojag said in the statement.
“We’ll miss you all, but we hope you’ll remember that we’ll always try to find new and exciting ways to help you enjoy Minecraft as much as we have.”
Mojag is now working on a “new and different game” Mojang is also seeking crowdfunding funding to create a “Minecraft alternative” Mojag has previously said it plans to continue developing the game for “many years to come”.
Mojang’s statement continued to say that “the new game will be released in 2019, but it will be free for the public and you will be able to download the game once it is released.”
“You can download it from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/5g5lxw/update_june_2018/”, and it also said the game would be “completely free”.
“There will be no monetisation or advertising in the game, and it will remain completely free for anyone who owns the original game,” Mojog wrote.
Mojang, however, has yet to release a statement on Reddit, where it is frequently popular among Minecraft players.
